These DIY lights were made from some thin maple boards, off the shelf hardware, both copper and iron pipe fittings and single pine board. The shades are roof vents and the cord and socket are a pendant kit from World Market. They cost under $100 for both. The headboard is a simple pine frame with a sheet of 1/2" plywood mounted to hold the books. The books were an old set of encyclopedias with a cool atlas and some medical dictionaries. They were screwed directly into the plywood with a few pages reserved to glue down over the screws. This idea was borrowed from a post on the design everyday blog. They used novels which were different sizes and showed a bit of the underlying plywood. The encyclopedias were nice because of their symmetric heights.
